Introducing "Frames at Work"

Hello world! Caleb Roth here with my very first post. I just wrapped up a speaking gig at the Books and Beyond Book Conference in Las Vegas. After spending three days with entrepreneurs, I’m all energized and ready to take on the world!

Entrepreneurs inspire me. They have a unique way of seeing the world - recognizing opportunities to improve or to create something from scratch - and they find ways to turn their ideas into reality through taking massive action. Their curiosity and creativity are contagious. I wouldn’t bet against ANYONE in that room!

As a former bookseller turned software creator, I weaved those two entrepreneurial stories into a speech about frameworks. Frameworks can refer to the physical shell of a building or the rough mental models that we use to help make sense of the world. In a nutshell, a framework is a “frame at work” - or someone’s view of the world (their frame) that makes their life better (it works for them). In today’s knowledge-based economy, frames are everywhere. The trick is finding the right ones that will move you closer to your goals. And unless you test out the frames yourself, you’ll never know if they work for your particular situation.

Between listening to the incredible speakers and all the conversations that took place throughout the weekend, my mind is FULL of new ideas. One idea that particularly caught my interest was the idea of building in public. Chris Green - who goes by the title of “author-preneur” - encouraged me to document and share my entrepreneurial ventures and frameworks with a wider audience.

Thus, this blog was born.

(If you hate it, please blame Chris!)

After selling my software company in late 2022, I recently began working on a new venture called Beacons United. This company is so new that we don’t even have a website yet! We sell smart bracelets to creators, craftsman, and communities that desire to connect more meaningfully with those around them. If you want to peek behind the curtains and see the inner workings of a software company, this blog is for you. I’ll be sharing my frameworks for making business decisions, for selecting which metrics to track, and for deciding which customers and ideas to pursue. I’ll even share my financials along the way.

My goal is to test out a wide variety of frameworks and share them with all of you. If they work for me, perhaps you’ll also find value in them. The beautiful thing about business ideas is that many of them are transferrable. So even if you’re not directly involved in a software company, I’m sure you’ll find nuggets of wisdom that you can apply to your own situation.

Will you join me in this entrepreneurial exploration into frames at work?

All my best,

-Caleb
